Our Story

About That Place in Lead

A family bakery, breakfast counter and event space on historic Main Street in Lead, South Dakota.

Baked From Scratch on Historic Main Street

That Place in Lead opened its doors at 501 W Main St with one goal: give Lead and Deadwood a real, made-from-scratch bakery and breakfast counter. No shortcuts, no shipped-in shells , every donut, biscuit, and loaf starts in our kitchen before the sun's up.

We're set in one of South Dakota's most historic mining towns, a stone's throw from the old Homestake Mine and the Sanford Underground Research Facility, and just down the road from Deadwood's Main Street. That mix of old mining-town grit and modern Black Hills tourism is exactly who we bake for: the neighbors who've been coming in for years, and the travelers who wander in for coffee and don't leave without a box of donuts.

We're a family friendly business specializing in a full homemade breakfast menu served till noon, along with specialty coffee and homemade bakery items. Our facility is also available to rent for special events during our off hours, with a full bar available to accompany your event.

Hey everyone! I want to thank you all for the support you've shown over the past week! It's been exciting to have so much positive feedback! I wanted to introduce myself for those who don't know me.

My name is Tyneal and I've lived in Lead, SD for 17 years now. I'm married to Justin Thorp (he's the one to give credit to for all the craftsmanship you'll see around the business, I'm so thankful for him to help me make this all a reality!). I have 3 amazing children and I'm sure you'll see them by my side helping me around the business. They've waited so long for this, and they're just as excited as myself.

I grew up in Philip, SD in a large family of 8 children, so being busy seems normal to me. I'm a cosmetologist and massage therapist and have had a salon in Lead for over 16 years now. Obviously with this transition into a new business, I'll be doing less at my salon. I've always loved food, and having a bakery has always been a dream of mine. This has been a long time in the making, and a lot of long days, but when I see the smile on all your faces when you see the sweets and pastries, it's all worth it! I wanted to create a space that's inviting for families, and a place to create memories with your loved ones and friends.

I hope my business can have a positive impact on the community and create relationships and new friendships. Have a happy weekend and we will see you around!

What Makes Us Different

  • Everything made in-house, donuts, sourdough, pies, and breakfast are all baked fresh on-site, not trucked in.
  • A menu that fits the Hills, hearty breakfast classics alongside scratch bakery, built for locals and visitors alike.
  • Small-batch, not mass-produced, when we sell out of donuts, we sell out. That's how you know it's fresh.
  • Part of the Lead community, we're a stop on Main Street, not a franchise.
